    Texto Curatorial

llorarás only = your ass only = solo tu culo

    Curatorial Text

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
The Apocalypse of John 3:15,16; The Holy Bible, King James version, 1611
    http://bit.ly/1n71RB1

After all, there’s no doubt that, since it’s introduction about a century ago, the contemporary practices haven’t left room for half measures: you either passionately condescend towards its relevance and real interference in culture, or it’s accepted blindly as the hot new product of a system that, like every aspect in society, is impregnated in a voracious capitalism. Polemic and polarizing, the creative contemporary practices have shaken all notion of what is and isn’t Art (with a capital A), placing that responsibility in the eye of the critical spectator that, apparently, had stayed passive for many centuries.

In El Salvador there’s a generation of artist that’s starting to appear in bolder ways and with the biggest set of tools that’s ever been available; it’s all within the reach of their hands: the centuries of registered history (global and regional), the variety of the accessible tools (digital and physical), the diverse channels through which they can expose their creations and, thus, manage to get their 15 minutes of fame that Warhol predicted and that, as a matter of fact, have been going for very long time.

In a field where the obsession for classification has been intense, you could say that a new category is now open for every creator. The paths that artistic creation can take at these times in History (with a capital H) are unfathomable. In this way, this showcase has as a common denominator: the dynamism of a coming and going between popular techniques and fine arts, between virtual and physical places; between humour and seriousness, love and hate.

The male and female creators of this showcase imbibe themselves from the immense lake of culture that they share despite their own particular singularities per se: they make use of elements singular to salvadoreaness, from materials and concepts that arise from the popular national imagery, and translate them into artistic products with characteristics that place them in the currents of the current art tendencies. This way they propose to approach the diversity of the regional food to the same level as an oil painting; they place the play on words and vulgar double entendre in the same field that the most prestigious philosophical and literary currents: the pupusa has a cultural value of the same magnitude as a painting or a book, the peculiar uses of concepts such as “ass” and “dick” are so defining of a collective consciousness just like Sartre’s existentialism or Rand’s objectivism. Here the popular is not competing against the cultured, here they coexist.

llorarás only = your ass only = solo tu culo

The phrase “llorarás only” comes from the english “your ass only” that could be translated into “solo tu culo”, phonetically approximating the pronunciation with a latin accent of “your ass” to “llorás” and conjugating it into the future tense in the second person of the singular: “llorarás”. It indicates the predilection for anal sex, but hides this preference under many layers of semantic displacements. It denotes taboos and shame but, at the same time, a complex creative talent that uses the lingua franca (english) showing that the sexuality of this society is more diverse than it seems. Yes, in the public sphere we live in a heteronormative conservative society; we’ve been
shown to separate between men and women, hetero and homosexuals, left and right, good and bad; but when in the intimacies we share, we can observe that the reality is another one: less white and dark and with more shades of gray. The anus and its eroticness, expressed implicitly in the title of this showcase, is an invitation to focus in what we share

    Expo colectiva
    Collective show

    Being serious on the joke
Llorarás only is a collective show that tries to parody the art exhibit ideal held in the local circuit. The show contains, in its majority, works from very young artists that are at a starting point on their careers and, in a way, question some practices that are becoming obsolete at a fast pace. The showcase gathers a series of pieces where the formula is too obvious and its apparent cleverness doesn’t go further than a couple of dissimilar ideas put together. There are social commentaries on problematics that are no genuine interests, but they approach it in order to be able to integrate themselves in agendas that generate attention and resources.

In this region there is a desire to create the best contemporary art show, there is the desire that this dreamed show meets all the requirements of the preponderant model: an alternative industrial space or a white cube, properly light pieces and sterilely installed, “brainy” curatorial texts printed on vinyl taking over a whole wall as if written in the wall of History, “curatorship”; texts in english, and spanish, maybe, with quotes from obscure or conventionally acclaimed authors that holds up what the show is trying to say; there is a desire to create the contemporary art show that will put us on the level of the so called centers of the art world, that for which we stretch our necks on our toes so much and that which makes us dream.

Stands out the use of various edible pieces made with local typical foods that are bought daily on a big scale with rarely ever questioning their consumption: a pretty close parallel of the acceptance of the contemporary art discourses in our context. Llorarás only is a joke taken seriously, it’s a serious funny subject, a criticism achieved through practicing what is being criticized.

    2016

Since the mid 20th century, this sector of San Salvador has been synonym of lineage and economic wealth. But, through the decades, new urban projects appeared with derived names (Altos de la Escalón, Villas de la Escalón, Cumbres de la Escalón, etc.) because, in this way, they searched to transfer all of the prestige of the ascendent social mobility that’s sought so much . This fragrance is another extension of the same phenomena: when using it, all of the symbolic weight of this capital colonie moves onto the user, extending the privilege and status wherever they go. A splash is enough to have indiscriminate access to this prestige. Because smelling like white flower is not enough. Because the smell of Saint Helena is no yet that of an empress.

    Pre-Columbian Anime
Reinterpretation and intervention of an action figure

If so well, the Art School of University of El Salvador is known for its traditional european academic approach to the artistic practices, but one if its little known yet important legacies that it’s giving, from the students, is the hybrid of japanese anime aesthetics with pre-Columbian mesoamerican iconography. In this way, the revindication of the originary people is represented graphically through the heroism and prestige of anime and manga. This is why it’s been possible to appreciate the adventures of the brothers Hunahpú and Ixbalanqué (Popol Vuh) in the same style as the brothers Edowādo y Arufonsu Erurikku (Fullmetal Alchemist). In this intervened object, Asia and native America becomes again one culture, after 14,000 years, when migrations coming from the asiatic northeast crossed through the Bering strait during the last ice age, giving way to the first people of America.

We always say goodbye, we always see eachother again. The separation is momentary, regardless of it lasting months or years, lustrums. In darkness, our electromagnetic radiation is captured by a digital eye so that it will last. This radiation has a bigger wavelength than visible light. Far away, we will remember our presence breaking into the darks nature. If we play our cards well, this distance will become small and night will become day.

    Sprout of Violence

Once upon a time there were some very white little beans that wanted to grow in freedom, yet their environment wouldn’t allow it to them; so used to it they were, that they wouldn’t look at it anymore, it was like a glass prison that gave the appearance of an open field, one that when touched was as cold as ice itself. Life being unstoppable, the beans grew, holding on to the only possible environment to them: violent, negative, repressive. They developed in the world’s voyeuristic view and everyone saw them with pity, just like the exoticness that managed to get through adversity. “Hello there, my name is Tito… my name is Jordan… my name is Willy… we are the little beans that feed you, that enrich your lands. You may think we are not worth much, but we contain the mystery of life; we are a metaphor of the Universe. You see our environment, you see how we’ve clung to life. You may share us in Facebook, give us like; but, do you really value us? do you understand the role that we play in this plane? This story may seem unbelievable to you, a simple video streaming on the internet. But, have you thought that, on the other side of the image it’s me… and me… I am also… doubting your existence?” …
